It took a special person to be able to work twelve hour shifts three out of four weekdays as well as every other weekend and not complain about it, but it was because Katy loved her job, at least the part where she could help save a life, not the part she had to go through tonight. She got herself a cup of coffee from the staff room, which was occupied by some other nurses and doctors before heading to the cafeteria, which was closed and entirely deserted. It was unusual for Katy to feel anti-social, but it happened a few times since she started working at the hospital, she needed to be alone for a bit and process the earlier events, to mourn the loss of her patient. It was around midnight when they got the call from two ambulances heading their way; it was procedure to call in the doctors first and then head to the drop off area and help unload the patients, which was of course what Katy and another nurse did. The first ambulance was occupied by Katy’s new patient, a ten year old girl who was fatally injured in the car crash that just took her parents lives. The other was with the driver of the other car and the passenger, who were also injured, but nowhere near as critical as the little girl. Katy’s heart raced as the paramedics rolled her into the emergency room to the nearest empty booth of the trauma room, following close behind them ”Code trauma.” she says to the nurse at the counter with a shockingly calm tone of voice, who immediately announces this on the overhead pager. The doctor Katy had paged was already there, but they were going to need more help, seconds after the announcement Respiratory Specialists, a Nurse, Emergency Service Assistants and the MD resident arrived and the room filled up in what seemed like a second. Katy helped move the patient from the stretcher onto the hospital bed and ran up and down following the MD attending and MD residents orders along with another nurses. Only catching bits and pieces of the paramedic’s report on the girl which were listened to by the two doctors while assessing the patient and yelling out orders simultaneously. It was Katy’s job to administer fluids, medications and blood products, but finding a suitable vein on the arm of the bloody severely injured girl was much more difficult that one would think and it took her three tries before managing it successfully. She repeated this process three times, administering medication, blood and other fluids to the little girl in attempt to save her life. They worked on this little girl for three hours before her heart finally gave out and despite the doctors’ efforts they weren’t able to revive her. Before the two ambulances came in the emergency room was practically deserted except for the staff wondering around, but after them, more just kept coming in, there was no time for shock, so Katy had to push on and do three more hours of non-stop injections and IV administering, wound cleaning and other things, fortunately another patient wasn’t lost that night. Now that Katy had time to process everything and didn’t have to be calm anymore, tears started rolling down her cheek, she sat there for over an hour crying, she had seen a lot of deaths, but this ten year old girl was the first child that young she had seen die. After the hour she rubbed her puffy eyes, wiping away all the tears and threw away her empty disposable coffee cup before heading back to the staff room to clock out. She got a lot of sympathetic looks for the other staff as she did; she was still the newbie and had a lot to get used to. After getting dressed in her clothes which she left in her locker she left the hospital in a hurry, muttering quick goodbyes to everyone she saw. Katy didn’t have a car yet, she was saving up for one but it was going to take a while before she could afford it since she had to pay rent for her two bedroom apartment in the heights, which she lived in alone and of course buy groceries every month. Instead of phoning a cab se decided to walk to five guys for some breakfast, now that she was done working she could feel the tiredness creeping up on her. Just as she walked into the restaurant she bumped into someone hard, her mind was on the little girl and she wasn’t paying much attention to where she was going ”Oh crap, I’m sorry…” TEMPLATE BY OH SO COOPERNATURAL ! @ CAUTION. |
