you were wondering. also i'll have you know that i am twenty-six & loving it. oh. you've heard that I'm hetero? & that I'm from minsk, russia? well the rumors are true for once. well I gotta get going, crime is calling. see ya'! history athena was born to a wealthy family in the capital of belarus, minsk. she was not originally born 'athena middleton' however, but rather Ksenya Lekochka. her father, otto lekochka, was a wealthy man, a guard to the belarusian leading family (a member of the secret service, if you will), and as the youngest of two, athena (or then, ksenya) was awarded with anything she wanted. her mother died when ksenya was only a child, eight years old in fact, and her death tore otto apart. he hid it well in public, but at home he began long stays in his study alone, doing things his children never could have imagined. ksenya grew closer to her older brother, mikhail, then and neither of them hardly ever saw their father. it wasn't until ksenya was thirteen that they found out what he had been doing all of those nights in his study. following his wife's death, otto turned into a 'bad cop'. he resented losing his wife, and he smelled a conspiracy behind it all. sure enough, the russian mafia had been paid to off her by the very people otto gave his life to protect: the gorbunov family, the reigning family in belarus at the time. otto had been deeply in love with his wife, so much so that his employers believed her a liability to him. believing the removal of her would transform otto's adoration for his wife into undying loyalty to his country, they ordered her murdered. however, after a year of digging, otto found the truth, and his revenge was ingenious. he didn't retaliate immediately. he planned it out over the five years he spent slaving away in his study. he pinpointed routines of the gorbunov family, used his closeness to them to hunt them, and then he struck, leaving no trace of himself. however, as the gorbunovs' relatives began to go missing or were found brutally murdered, the press began to ask questions. so otto had to act to get to the immediate family before his window of opportunity closed. on the eve of a peace summit in switzerland, an event otto was assigned to attend to protect the gorbunovs, he executed his plan. the only snag was a factor he hadn't anticipated before: his son and daughter were invited to attend along with them. the gorbunovs were not stupid people; they were high in the government and dirty, and they were constantly suspicious of everyone and everything. sensing the growing hostility of their long-loyal otto, they had invited his children, believing he would never make a move on them with his offspring around. they were wrong. otto encouraged his son and daughter to spend an evening with the gorbunov children (who he was reluctant to kill since they were innocents in the entire affair), and he struck after the gorbunov parents were tipsy after one of the festivities. escorting them back to their suite, he waited until the precise moment when they would enter the darkest part of the castle's travel-ways, and he spun on them, striking swiftly and deftly, killing them both. otto looked into the man's eyes as he died, spitting on him in hatred and telling him he hoped he rotted in hell for killing his wife. to otto's dismay, as the dead bodies of the gorbunovs slumped to the floor, he turned to realize his children, as well as the children of the two dead people on the floor, were standing behind him, having come out of their rooms to see what the scuffle outside had been. they stared at him in shock and horror, seeing the blood dripping from his fingers and the dead bodies at his feet. mikhail was the first to yell for help. their father tried to quiet them, tried to explain how he had turned into a murderer seemingly overnight, but the children wouldn't listen. the gorbunov adolescants ran screaming down the passageway while mikhail fought with his father to get free to call the rest of the secret service, and only ksenya stood stock still, too stunned and confused to move. she knew her father. he could never do something like this. she didn't know his inner turmoil over her mother's death or the horrible truth behind her death. needless to say, otto was thrown into prison with a life sentence for the murder of the gorbunovs, and his children were thrown into the foster care system. because they were viewed as 'dirty' to the belarusians, they were picked up by an underground adoption ring and sent, illegally, to parents in england. their names were changed to athena and michael to erase them from belarus. this probably saved their lives from political loyalists who would want to see them dead as payment for the crimes of otto lekochka. thankfully, the two were adopted by a loving english couple who had never been able to have children of their own. wendy and stephen weddington took in the two teenagers, putting them into the best schools in england. since they'd never had children of their own, the weddingtons had become wealthy through their work (stephen and wendy were both lawyers) so they were able to afford any schooling their adopted children needed. athena, as she had been renamed when she and her brother were put into the system, had spent years obsessing over her father's motives behind killing the gorbunovs. she had been friends with the youngest daughter of the gorbunov family, margarita, and had spent much time around the reigning family before the parents' deaths. she had never seen the dirtier side of the family, the side that would form an alliance with the russian mafia, and she never understood. out of high school, athena went to college to become a lawyer like her adoptive parents (she'd always been intrigued by the law and law enforcement since she'd grown up with her father as a secret service agent and had seen the inner workings of the law since a young age). however, her path would turn when she was approached by an agent of interpol who'd seen her high marks in school and offered her an internship at the intelligence agency. after college, she went to interpol and began as a lowly peon. she moved up swiftly through the ranks due to her sharp mind and deductive skills. she became a junior agent by the time she was 23. after ten years of her father being in prison, however, athena found she still couldn't drop her doubts about the night the gorbunovs were murdered. while on vacation, she travelled back to belarus and visited the maximum-security prison where her father was incarcerated. having not seen her father in ten years, she was stunned into silent sadness when she saw him, emaciated and worn down from his years in prison. however, when she looked in his eyes, she still saw the spirit in him she recognized from her childhood. she spent a week in belarus, visiting him in prison every day, and listening to his story. she was skeptical at first, thinking it the mere ramblings of a mad man, but as her father gave her the details behind the conspiracy that led him to murder the gorbunovs, athena began to believe him. she looked into it after spending that time with him, and she realized the truth: her mother had been murdered because of the family she'd been as close to as if it had been her second home. she tried to share the findings with her brother, but he had never let go of his anger toward their father, so he wouldn't listen to her. returning to interpol, she had her heart set on vindicating her father, but it was not to be. she began to search for more evidence and managed to get herself in hot water with the russians, a danger even interpol couldn't protect her from. you see, the russian mafia didn't enjoy anyone snooping around in their business, so they set up a hit on her. her superiors didn't take her seriously when she told them her concerns, and they sent her out on a mission anyway. the mission was spoiled when a russian hit squad burst in and gunned down all of the agents and their contacts. athena only managed to barely escape with her life. when she returned to the interpol office, however, they refused to coddle her, and her anger (the anger she'd inherited from her father) flared up. vowing to take her survival in her own hands, she staged her own death. it wasn't hard, what with the russian mafia still chasing her, and she disappeared from the world of 'normal' people. having been an interpol agent aided her in knowing where the crime meccas were in the underworld, so she returned to her hometown of minsk, and she went to an underground fighting ring and center for everything illegal in minsk's underbelly. at first, she was almost raped by a group of thugs who saw her pretty face and thought to take advantage of her, but she was saved by a mysterious figure who ordered the men to get their hands off or they would die a swift death. this man was none other than ari maslov, a notorious russian thief and forger. he took athena under his wing and began to train her in the art of sleight of hand and stealing. it wasn't until a year later that he confided to her that he had known exactly who she was that night she had walked into the fight club. he had been imprisoned on charges for stealing a raphael painting when her father had been admitted to the prison eleven years before. otto and ari had become friends, and otto had confided his secrets in ari, a trustworthy criminal among criminals. otto had told ari about his son and daughter, and asked him to find them when he was released (since ari's sentence was significantly shorter than otto's), and ari had promised. to his surprise, athena had walked right into his sight that night in the club, and he was able to fill half of his promise. he had tried to contact her brother michael, but he'd gotten the same reaction she had gotten when she'd tried to tell him about their father's actions: flat rejection. michael's anger was too powerful for him to forgive, and it probably always would be. ari became a second father figure to her as she perfected his art, and when he thought she was good enough to take on the big jobs, he began to give his work to her. she wouldn't find out until six months later that ari had terminal cancer and would die. he had been training her to take his place. his death tore her up as much as her own father's imprisonment, and she became an even cooler head following another great loss. she was a master of sleight of hand, and she could pickpocket someone as if it was magic. throughout the underworld, she became known as 'the goddess' or simply 'goddess' due to her good looks and cunning ways, plus her name helped in getting her the moniker. hearing that the notorious 'v' was expanding his crew and had relocated to the states, athena's interest was peaked. although she'd never killed anyone, even in her days as an interpol agent, she knew she was the best thief a man could ask for, so she tracked v to sapphire bay. once here, she offered her skills to him and has become part of his team. personality athena went to the best schools in her teenage years, thanks to her adopted parents, and she excelled in her studies. she also progressed quickly through the ranks when she was at interpol, so she's far from stupid. she also isn't afraid to bring it up either. she's not vain when it comes to her smarts, but she won't let anyone patronize her. patronizing is one of the top ways you will get on her shit list. not afraid to speak up, athena has a tendency to be blunt and snarky. she also has a sarcastic streak in her, so buyer-beware. she loves deeply and strongly when she falls in love, and she has an undying loyalty to her father and brother. she is especially close to her brother due to those years as a child when their father didn't spend much time with them at all. it breaks her heart that her brother can't forgive their father, and she wishes with every part of her being that they could reconnect, but she can't force her brother to do so. while some people feel guilt over being criminals, athena doesn't. she chose this path after she was forsaken by those in 'upstanding' society, and it's her life now. the pain she feels over the injustice done to her mother, then her father, and then losing ari, her mentor, on top of that is too much for her to ever go back. | [atrb=width,200] |
