I'm not strong enough can't run from you i just run back to you [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image: url(http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad32/paperheartx_x/bg3.png); width: 388px; padding-top: 20px; padding-bottom: 20px;]instead of spending a week inside the mayor's mansion, bored out of her mind, shasta decided to take a walk. despite the fact that she was a native californian, she did have a heavy winter coat, so what was stopping her? besides, she knew getting caleb to visit her at the mansion was impossible, so if she was going to see him, she was going to have to go to him. as she trudged out into the snow surrounding the mansion, she smiled to herself and shook her head. caleb was hilarious when he joked about being afraid of her father. she didn't think he really was, deep down, but he was right that her father could, ultimately, decide if he kept his job or not. so it was probably a good idea daddy didn't know his little girl was dating the police deputy. her father could be intensely protective when it came down to it, and he protected his only child and daughter like she was the most important thing in his life. she loved her father, but sometimes she had to admit he smothered her to a degree. hence the reason for needing to escape the house she'd lived in since childhood.
tucking her hands into the pockets of the downy jacket she wore, she hustled through the snow and down into the town. the mansion was situated basically in the heart of town, in its own massive lot behind town hall and the park which was partially named after her family. although more seclusion would have been nice, she had grown up there and it was all she remembered from a young age. her father had been mayor of sapphire bay since longer than most people living there currently could remember. the benefit to her home being, literally, in the center of sapphire bay was that she didn't have far to walk to go anywhere. she hardly ever had to use her car unless she wanted to make a statement about her wealth or wanted to explore the countryside.
thinking about the countryside surrounding the city made her smile. she'd lost her virginity to caleb in those hills, and the thought sent a shiver through her that was far unrelated from the cold of the snowstorm that blew around her. she couldn't deny that this meeting wasn't entirely innocent. after that first time, she found herself wanting more of him, and she couldn't deny it. her relationship with caleb wasn't only about sex, but now that it was added to the equation, she couldn't deny that she enjoyed the added benefits.
she had entered the area of town called 'the slums' by the upper crust society she knew before she realized she'd walked that far. glancing up at the buildings, she found the numbers and migrated to the one where caleb lived. she'd visited him twice since that day in the country, and she hadn't known pleasure and satisfaction like she did now ever before meeting him. he talked to her, joked with her, pleasured her, and overall managed to make her feel like a person instead of just a woman or a sexual object. she enjoyed his company, and she knew beyond a doubt that she was falling in love with him.
reaching his building, she climbed the stairs and huddled inside away from the cold. ringing the bell to let him know she was coming, she climbed the stairs and knocked on his front door. her hands were freezing and her nose wasn't much better, and she hoped some company and entertainment away from home would help to thaw her. plus, it was caleb. he was sure to heat her up.

Yawning, Caleb rolled over and buried his face into his pillow. The sun was streaming into the room; the whiteness of the snow reflection the sun and making it seem so much brighter outside. In reality, and this was from him living outside of Boston for so long, Caleb knew that it was bitterly cold outside. He had moved across the country to get away from his demanding father and the nasty weather New England offered all the time. And now he didn’t want to escape the confides of his apartment, especially on his day off. Granted, he could ask Shasta if she wanted to do anything, but he held back. His stomach rolled at the thought of her, and he wanted to die. Juniper had meant nothing that one time they had become intimate, and it was way before Shasta and he were serious. Yet he knew that there was bad blood between the two and he would be dead if Juniper was mentioned, even as a friend. Shasta hated some people, and Juniper was pretty much the top person on her shit list for some reason. So he held back the information that he was friends with her and that they had slept together once. It had been within the first couple of days of moving to Sapphire Bay and the day after the jail cell.
Had he known he would’ve seen Shasta again, he would have never gone and slept with Juniper. Shasta was a spitfire and he loved her. Well, he was beginning to. His stomach rolled again as his mind flipped to the afternoon in the country side. It had been perfect and filled with emotions he was not familiar with. Caleb had spent decades guarding his heart and she was working her way into it. What was the point of falling in love if people never stayed together? More than fifty percent of marriage ended in divorce and some even ended in death. Considering he was a cop, he knew that Shasta would be even more likely to get shot then being the mayor’s daughter. That scared him the most. The last thing he wanted was to bring pain, whether physical or emotional, to her. That alone would make him want to jump off the highest and closest building to him. He was falling in love, and completely in denial about these feelings. Feelings were dangerous and could be squished.
Rolling out of bed, he threw on a pair of jeans before running his fingers through his hair and making his way towards the kitchen. His coffee was already being brewed and he filled a cup quickly before the buzzer rang. Leaving his cell phone on the counter, Caleb let out a quick ”Can I help you?” before hearing the soft and delicious voice of Shasta Le Stoat. The one girl he couldn’t have around, for he was growing a heart. Pressing the buzzer to let her in, he quickly tossed some garbage into the can and folded some blankets on the couch. His apartment was small and defiantly not what Shasta was used to, but it was clean. He had cleaned it just the night before after finding a molding piece of bread under the couch. That was where he had drawn the line and begun to clean the place like no tomorrow.
Faintly, he heard his cell phone buzz and grabbed it, seeing a message from Juniper. His stomach dropped even lower and he shoved the phone into his pocket after sending a quick message back. No, he would not think about that. Shasta was here and that was all that mattered. A knock on the door broke his thought process and he opened it, his chest gleaming in the light. ”Hey princess” he said, tossing her a crooked grin and planting a kiss on her pink lips. ”This is a nice surprise”.

I'm not strong enough can't run from you i just run back to you [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image: url(http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad32/paperheartx_x/bg3.png); width: 388px; padding-top: 20px; padding-bottom: 20px;]the moment the door swung open and he was standing before her with nothing but his pants on, shasta forgot she'd ever been cold. her face flushed, but she was thankful her cheeks were already red from being cold outside. she offered him a coy smile as he called her princess. she closed the small distance between them, leaning up on her tiptoes to kiss him lightly on the lips, her hand balancing her by touching his chest. she didn't remove it as she pulled back from him, but she smiled mischievously at him. "i didn't catch you at a bad time, did i? you don't have your other girlfriend in here or something, do you?" she asked jokingly, poking him playfully and moving past him to remove her coat. she glanced briefly around the apartment, but not a hint of disdain came into her mind. she loved the coziness of the place, the small space and the smell of cologne mixed with that distinctly male scent she associated with caleb. she had always sensed he thought she was a snob, and sure, she was most of the time, but not when it came to him.
turning back to him, she folded her coat over her arm, not wanting to impose by simply tossing it over some chair or something, and she smiled at him. "have you fed yourself since it started snowing? and no," she held up a finger to silence any protesting, "chinese takeout doesn't count." raising her eyebrows, she laid her coat down finally and made her way to the kitchen. it was dirty, as she'd expected, but she didn't care. sorting through the pots and pans, she found two she found acceptable and rinsed them out, placing them on the stove and starting some water to boil in one while she melted butter in the other. she needed to preoccupy herself so she didn't constantly think about what she'd worn underneath her clothes just for this occasion. ever since they'd slept together, that magical afternoon in the country, she couldn't think about hardly anything else. she wanted to feel his skin on her skin again, wanted to kiss his lips. she wanted to be close to him like that again, but she was shy about it. she'd never been a slut, but she'd always been a tease, and she figured that didn't have to change simply because they'd finally had sex. she could still tease him.
as the water heated up, she moved around the countertop, planting her hands on it and pulling herself up to a seated position on top. biting her bottom lip, she held up a finger and beckoned caleb over to her. "i've missed you..." she stated sweetly with a hint of desire in her voice. "i haven't had anyone to pick on for like a week now." she winked at him and kissed his forehead as he came to stand closer to her. as he grew closer, she looked at him through her eyelashes and smiled sexily. "i have something for you..." she whispered seductively, running a finger down his bare chest. "but you have to prove you're a good boy before you can have it." she smirked and pursed her lips. she had made herself right at home in his apartment, and she hoped the surprise she had in store for him would make her imposition worthwhile.

She looked as beautiful and perfect as always and he sent her a grin. His heart was beating loudly, and deep down, he knew he should tell the truth. Soon. But the words continued to get caught in his throat but he continued to smile. Faking everything was his job and pretending everything was alright was something he had perfected with his father. Her hands grazed his chest as she stepped away and when he heard her words, he could have sworn he just shit himself. Letting out a low chuckle, he watched her go into the kitchen area. His apartment was small and not the size she was used to, but it was perfect for him. ”Of course I don’t. I only see one princess for me” he teased, wrapping his arms around her skinny waist and placing a delicate kiss on her neck. He let go and moved towards his cellphone before placing the gadget into his pocket before picking up a cup of coffee he had made recently.
His mouth opened to respond pizza, but she cut him off. No, Chinese food was beginning to bore him but he gave her a short smile before shuffling on the balls of his feet. ”I slept with Juniper!” he said suddenly, his face bright red before taking a step towards her, his voice already soothing and preparing to do damage control. ”It was before you and I became an item. I went over after getting a call about a bear attack and we had sex. It was nothing. It was before I began to fall in love with you.” the last part came out fast and furious, and he knew that she wouldn’t believe him. Hell, Caleb wouldn’t have believed himself had he been in her position. His heart was beating fast and he looked at her, his eyes pleading.
Already his heart was breaking. It was breaking into a thousand pieces and he wished he could take her pain away. Caleb didn’t fall in love, he didn’t care about things more than sex, and yet…here he was, pleading for the girl of his dreams to stay with him. Shasta would leave him, his gut knew that, and it would kill him. The booze was stocked up in his refrigerator for a reason. ”Shasta, I’m sorry. I’m so so sorry!”

I'm not strong enough can't run from you i just run back to you [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image: url(http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad32/paperheartx_x/bg3.png); width: 388px; padding-top: 20px; padding-bottom: 20px;]he called her his princess again, and her heart leapt in her chest. his arms around her felt so comforting and warm, and she melted into him, giggling when he kissed her neck. caleb made her feel like a teenager again, and she couldn't help loving him. she probably had since the first moment she'd seen him that day in the jail (although she certainly hadn't shown it by the way she'd acted). that would probably always be a joke between them when they were old and senile. just her luck, it'd be the only thing he'd remember. the thought made her smile amusedly to herself as she turned down the butter and slid onto the countertop. seductively, she pulled him closer to her as he checked his phone, and she nibbled on his ear as she pulled open her button-up shirt. a peek of the white lacy undergarments she had on began to show itself just as his mouth opened and word vomit spilled all over her like a cold shower.
"wait... what?" she asked lamely, the words that he slept with juniper slowly beginning to sink in. her fingers still held the hem of her shirt and she stared numbly at his chest as he took a step toward her. he'd already slept with juniper when he slept with her. although she had never imagined he was a virgin like she had been - she knew he wasn't - she suddenly felt overwhelmingly dirty at the realization that he'd shamelessly screwed some other woman perhaps only a day or two before her. surely, she was overreacting, but the fact that she'd seen juniper around town and hadn't known any better when all this time...
as he took a step closer to her, she held up her hand and shoved him away, not managing to push him very far. she slid off of the counter, landing on the floor with a dull thud, and she stood for a second as he continued his explanation. the countryside... a bear... we had sex... it was all too much. feeling tears burning in her eyes and refusing to let him see her cry, she hastily turned her back on him and went for her coat on the couch. right when she reached it, she heard those words: It was before I began to fall in love with you. she stopped dead in her tracks, closing her eyes against the simultaneous joy and pain those words brought to her. she loved caleb, she knew it, and hearing that he had fallen in love with her too was too much. pushing it all down, she forced herself to turn toward him, a cold emotionless expression on her beautiful face.
"your phone... on your phone... that was a text from her, wasn't it?" she asked, her voice quiet and shakey. she needed to regain her confidence. holding up a hand to him, she shook her head, "no, i don't even want to know. it doesn't matter. i knew you were friends, i should've... i should've known better..." turning her back to him, she marched to the door and her hand was turning the knob as caleb chased her and repeatedly apologized. as she pulled open the door, she swallowed heavily. she wanted to scream and yell at him, tell him she loved him and how could having sex with someone else mean nothing to him when it meant everything to her? but no, that would require too much explaining, and she didn't have the will for that now. her hand shook on the knob, and she hoped he didn't see it as she turned to look him in the eye. "i'm sorry too, caleb."
with that, she walked out the door, slamming it behind her as she took the stairs two at the time to get out of the building. she hastily buttoned up the buttons she'd undone on her shirt and pulled her coat on over her shoulders to ward against the cold. as tears began to race down her face as she wandered without thinking where she was going, she briefly hoped caleb would follow her. that's what happened in all of the romantic movies, wasn't it? but no, this was real life, and that sort of thing didn't happen in real life. she stumbled through the snow, wiping frantically at her eyes and nose until she accidentally ran headlong into a moving body.
"oh! i'm so..." she stopped as she looked up into dangerous green eyes and black hair. "...sorry." moving to the side, she tried to go around the man she'd run into, but his arm snaked out and wrapped around her waist before she could react. she yelped in surprise, the idea of another man other than caleb touching her still turning her stomach despite what she had just learned, and looked confusedly into the man's face. his irish accent was cutting and clear when he spoke.
"going somewhere, lassy?" he asked with a dark grin that she could've sworn glinted in the light like a gangster in a cartoon. "um, i'm sorry i bumped into you, but i was just on my way home," she stammered, trying to move away from him to no avail. he had a tight, painful grip on her that kept her from escaping. "you're... hurting me..." she managed.
"yes, yes, that's the point, aye?" he retorted, shoving her toward an alleyway. she fought him, but he was far stronger and taller, and she had no hope to escape. seeing the parked car, its exhaust pipe puffing up heat happily as it waited to swallow her and take her to god-knows-where, she panicked like a cornered animal. the irishman wrapped his arms around her, holding down her hands so she couldn't hit him and clamping a hand over her mouth so her screams would never be heard. "now, now, dearie. we need to send your boyfriend a little message. don't fight it. you won't die... not soon anyway." his evil little chuckle sent a shiver down her spine. regrettably, she had just broken up with the very 'boyfriend' the man referred to, and she was probably be falling off of the face of the planet in more actual terms. she was very literally screwed, and not in the good way. she could fight it all she wanted, but shasta le stoat was now the prisoner of connor selwyn and the irish mob.
"stop fighting, damn it." he'd had enough. reaching up, he hit her in the back of her head, and her vision swam, becoming engulfed by blackness. just as she passed out, falling into the waiting car, the last words she uttered were, "caleb... i love you..."
