Yes, this is a little fact that has grown up with Hester. She was named after the protagonist in The Scarlett Letter, Hester Prynne though her mother did not like Prynne for a middle name and went with Lynne – something phonetically very similar – instead. Her mother always called her Hester Lynne, which Hes hated because it made her sound like a hick baby or something. All her life she’d been fairly certain her mother had been a mail order bride. Though, always upon asking such a question she was quickly hustled off to her room, further growing the suspicion, but never getting a solid answer. She was never too fond of her parents as they were always telling her who to be instead of letting her figure out who she wanted to be. Even though she grew up well off for the first eight or so years of her life she had a very demanding father who became violent when everyone didn’t bow to his every demand. She did however take dance and ballet lessons, which was more work than play for a child her age, but she actually enjoyed it and it was her escape from home. It also came out that her father was sleeping with a sixteen year old girl, knocked her up and forced her to “dispose” of the problem. He quickly lost his job and with it their “cozy” life. He became a used car sales man – putting his lack of morals to an all-time low as he was not any bit reputable as some used car places were. He also had quite the gambling problem which put the entire family in debt. If it hadn’t been for her natural talent as a dancer, Hester probably wouldn’t have gotten any formal education, let alone be able to attend the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. She studied there from the age of twelve on full scholarship and even preformed in their dance company for a lot of years. Being in the world of dance exposed her to a lot of things that little girls shouldn’t be exposed to, such as eating disorders and sexual exploitation. She managed though, dance was the only thing she knew she had and if she didn’t keep working she wouldn’t have any education, except that of a public school in a crappy neighborhood. However at the age of nineteen Hester suffered a serious ankle injury ending her chances of continuing to dance professionally. However instead of returning home she moved in with her aunt Helena and her husband Henrik, she’d always been close to her aunt and loved her uncle dearly after she got to know him, she learned what a gentleman was. During her recovery she was forced to discover what she loved to do. She chose drawing and taking photos as a new passion as that’s what she’d always done as “hobbies” and never dreamed they could be jobs. With a nurturing environment and the care of a couple who had no children of their own to spoil they helped her find ways to expand those talents and interests. They also reached out to the other children of the Fry family and helped them through college as much as they could on their fairly meager incomes. Hester has been published as a cover artist for comic books. Three years ago she was offered a job as a full time illustrator for a newspaper, though the job ended after only six months due to the paper going bankrupt. She’s currently working as a waitress at a strip club, but she is still pursuing Photography and Illustration as a career. She’s even done a couple local plays. She’s creative and likes to keep her life in that realm, she figures when she stops creating it means she’s given up. caroline - 19 - forever |
